Spring Break and Summer Camps Plan B

Reasons for Plan B

We might be unable to proceed with our plan for in-person spring break and summer camps if the following happens:

  • there is a stay at home order
  • someone attending camp tests positive for COVID. If this happens the Health Dept. will advise us about what to do. In some cases INDIVIDUALS staying home might be all we need to do, in other cases we might need to close for in-person for the week.

In the Event of a Plan B Pivot

If we are unable to meet in-person, each camp has a zoom camp option.

If we need to switch to zoom camp we will be relying on parents to help get materials to campers and to provide adult supervision at home. We will all need to bring our creativity and flexibility if we need to make that PIVOT! The good news is, Clapping Hands (and probably most of you) will have an entire year of online workshops under our belts by summer 2021, so we’re confident that we can have a good time on Zoom!

Plan B Overview

Each week’s zoom camp is created by that week’s teaching artists and camp staff  specifically for that camp and that age group.

For some camps we would like ALL the campers to commit to Zoom Camp plan B. We made this choice when we think the camp will go really well on zoom and when we have older campers.  (let us know if you have concerns about that.)

For most camps, the Zoom alternative is ELECTIVE, but that also means we will need a minimum to sign up for Zoom Camp in order for  it to HAPPEN. We should know well in advance of camp if we can provide Zoom camp or not.

A few camps we just don’t think will translate to Zoom gracefully, and we will cancel if we can’t be in person.

Below is the BASIC SCHEDULE for  zoom camp. And below that is SPECIFIC camp by camp information.  Most camps will meet on the basic schedule below. Ukulele Camps will meet on a different schedule which you will find at the bottom of this page.

Daily Schedule for Plan B on Zoom

If we meet on zoom we will have a modified schedule.  Ukulele Camps have their own zoom camp schedule which you will find at the bottom of this page. MOST Zoom Camps will meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on this basic schedule:

Camp by Camp Details for Plan B

Earth Romp camp! April 5-9, 2021. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Ages 7-10. $275

Wild art, nature exploration, earth skills, running around fun,  with Louise Omoto Kessel and Jan Burger.

In case of Zoom Camp, Jan, Louise and the rest of the staff will magically switch from EARTH ROMP to  ZOOM ROMP. We will PIVOT to things that will work WELL on Zoom. So we won’t be bringing all the SAME activities to Zoom Camp, but we will bring our BEST selves and everything we know —- which collectively is really A TON OF really fun stuff! As an example, probably no fire-making, but maybe stop action movies! We will be able to do more Earth Romp activities via ZOOM if we can do it as a PARENT CHILD camp; and our younger campers will have the best experience on ZOOM ROMP with some adult support regardless of the activities.

Our Stories, Our Selves: Storytelling Workshop. May 31-June 4, 2021. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Women, adults.

A journey of discovering and sharing personal stories and developing a sense of “thinking like a heroine” in everyday life; with Louise Omoto Kessel.

Our Stories, Our Selves will work well on zoom and we would like everyone to commit to the Zoom version if we are unable to meet in person.

Watercolor Camp. June 7-11, 2021. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 10-adult.

Jump into watercolors, collage, finger paint, mixed media and drawing with fun experimental approaches to traditional art techniques, with Vessna Scheff.

Watercolor camp will work well on zoom and we would like everyone to commit to the Zoom version if we are unable to meet in person.

Toys and Games Camp. June 14-18, 2021. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ages 7-10.

Hula hooping, toy making, running around fun with Louise Omoto Kessel, Meghan Kerr, and Jan Burger

In case of Zoom Camp, Meghan, Jan, Louise and the rest of the staff will magically PIVOT to things that will work WELL on Zoom. So we won’t be bringing all the SAME activities to Zoom Camp, but we will bring our BEST selves and everything we know —- which collectively is really A TON OF really fun stuff! Parents should prepare spaces where children can hula hoop and do messy art projects. Our younger campers will have the best experience on ZOOM CAMP with some adult support.

Creative Writing Camp. June 21-25, 2021. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 13-19.

Poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction with Sara Graybeal

Creative Writing Camp will work well on zoom and we would like everyone to commit to the Zoom version if we are unable to meet in person.

Teen Music & Dance Camp. June 28-July 2, 2021. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ages 13-18.

Hip hop, latin dance, contemporary, african, tap, music jams and more! With Teli Shabu, Andrea Lara, Kennard Williams and guests.

We have experience presenting Dance classes on zoom and they work well. Music is more challenging for a number of reasons. So, zoom camp will lean towards dance in the morning and will include dance plus a variety of “anything goes” choice activities in the afternoon.

Ukulele Camp for Beginner and Beginner-Intermediate players. July 5-9, 2021. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 10-adult.

For absolute beginners, beginners, and beginning intermediate players with Sarah Perry and Alex Nelson.

See Ukulele camp schedule below. We have opted for private lessons and asynchronous video lessons in the morning as we think that is the zoom plan that will actually work on Zoom. It won’t be as much total program time on Zoom for each camper, but we believe it will match the skill development of in person camp a lot better than a group lesson on zoom.

Everything’s a Puppet Camp. July 12-19, 2021. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ages 7-12.

All kinds of puppets and original puppet shows! With Jimmy Magoo

Everything’s a Puppet began as a virtual workshop so we know it works well on zoom and campers are encouraged to sign up for the Zoom version!

Teen Art Hangout, July 19-23, 2021. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ages 13-18.

Watercolor, upcycled clothing, drawing, zentangles, printmaking, photography and more.

Teen Art Hangout began as a virtual workshop and it works great on zoom! We would like everyone to commit to the Zoom version if we are unable to meet in person.

Ukulele Camp for Intermediate and Advanced Players. July 26-30, 2021. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 10-adult.

For people with solid ukulele skills who are ready to push their abilities to the next level with Jimmy Magoo and Alex Nelson.

See Ukulele camp schedule below. We have opted for private lessons in the morning as we think that is the zoom plan that will actually work on Zoom. It won’t be as much total program time on Zoom for each camper, but we believe it will match the skill development of in person camp a lot better than a group lesson on zoom.

Music Camp: Instrument Build & Play, Drumming, Jams & More. August 2-6, 2021. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ages 10-adult.

Build your own shekere or mbira and learn to play it! Drumming and dancing too! With Teli Shabu, Beverly Botsford, and guests.

Music is tricky on zoom. Intricate instructions for engineered projects also. Of all our camps this summer Music Camp is our biggest challenge in moving to zoom. HOWEVER Teli has been teaching instrument making and music on zoom through out the pandemic, so it can be done!

If we are part way through the week we will make the PIVOT and complete your instruments  and make on zoom! Our experience is that it takes longer to build things on Zoom than in person. Thus, some of our music instruction might shift to rhythm games and singing.

If we learn we have to switch to online Camp BEFORE camp begins, we may elect to cancel Music Camp.

Felting Camp. August 9-13, 2021. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 10-adult.

Create wonderful things from colorful wool using wet felting and needle felting techniques with Louise Omoto Kessel.  Complete beginners and experienced felters welcome.

Felting works great on Zoom and Louise has been teaching felting on Zoom all year. We would like everyone to commit to the Zoom version if we are unable to meet in person.
