TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL

tropical storm chantal damage and repair story!

On July 6, 2025 The flash flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal overflowed the pond on our driveway and did serious damage to the pond dam. We had just had significant work done on the dam a few months before; all of that work was washed away. Because the pond dam is part of our driveway (we drive over it to get to camp) we spent the rest of the summer walking or shuttling campers into camp (depending on the age of the camper and the weather!)

Because “putting it back like before” seemed vulnerable to this happening again, James, our driveway guy, recommended that we:

  • Repair the dam and the driveway from the forceful water damage; and reinforce that work in a more substantial way. (picture heavy duty landscape cloth held down by many small boulders.)
  • Raise the dam a little on the north side
  • Install a storm drain that will fill from the top when the water reaches a certain height and at that point will send water through a 48 inch concrete pipe; the design of the storm drain can push MANY gallons of water through quickly. So, hopefully this significant upscaling of the dam technology will help prevent the pond from overflowing in the future.

This work is expensive. We brought the cost down a lot by harvesting dirt from our land instead of trucking it in; that saved at least $7000. But, even so, the total cost is estimated to be $30,000. The pond is on our neighbors land, but since camp is 99.9% of the traffic on the driveway, we are splitting the cost of the repair. Thus, in addition to the fundraising we do for our no one turned away camp scholarship program000 we are adding $15,000 for driveway restoration!

Repairs are underway NOW!

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISING

clapping hands farm no one turned away scholarship program

In addition to the money we are raising for the storm damage, we routinely need to raise tens of thousands of dollars every year for our scholarship program. At Clapping Hands Farm no one is turned away if they can’t afford camp. We operate on a pay as you can basis; between ⅓ and ½ of our campers receive scholarship help.

In 2025 we had our first full schedule of summer camps and year round programs with a full complement of campers since before the pandemic. We gave out over $60,000 worth of scholarship assistance; we are still raising money to cover our 2025 programs. We plan a similar program for 2026.

When we have raised enough for the dam repair we will continue fundraising for our scholarship program!
