camp playdough
YOU WILL NEED:
2 cups flour
4 t. cream of tartar
1 cup salt
2 T. oil
2 cups water
liquid water color or food coloring
TO MAKE PLAYDOUGH:
MIX dry ingredients in a sauce pan.
MIX liquid water color or food coloring with 2 cups water.
ADD oil and colored water to dry ingredients and stir.
COOK over medium heat stirring constantly until the dough forms a ball.
REMOVE from pan and put on floured board or counter.
KNEAD till it is a nice consistency (add a little more flour if it is sticky).
STORE in zip lock bags or sealed containers, it will keep for quite a while.
gloop
YOU WILL NEED:
at least 1 box corn starch
A big bowl
water
optional: paint or food coloring
TO MAKE GLOOP:
Put cornstarch in a bowl and add water a LITTLE at a time until all the cornstarch is moistened, but not runny. If it gets too runny you will either need to add more cornstarch or wait till the water evaporates.
Play with the strange properties of this “non-Newtonian” liquid:
Take a hand full and roll it fast and hard to make a ball; then relax your hand and watch it drip and drool out of your hand!
Hit or smack the surface; slowly sink your fingers into the gloop.
Have fun!
slime
YOU WILL NEED:
glue- I like clear glue, but white glue also works
water
paint – any WASHABLE paint will work- food coloring, liquid water color, tempera paint.
borax- a powder available in the laundry section of the grocery store. comes in a big box. Should be stored out of reach of children!
“1 part” can be as small as a Tablespoon or as big as a cup. I’d recommend a 1/4 cup for an “individual serviing.”
TO MAKE SLIME:
MIX together 1 part glue and 1 part water
ADD paint and STIR (make sure you stir thoroughly BEFORE the next step)
MIX a spoonful of Borax with 1 part water. This is the magic ingredient!
POUR the borax and water solution into the glue/water/paint mixture while stirring constantly.
this is a chemical reaction! = SLIME!
STORE in an airtight container, it will keep a long time.
fizzy colors
YOU WILL NEED:
baking soda
vinegar
liquid water color or food coloring
a pipette or water dropper
TO MAKE FIZZY COLORS:
SPREAD baking soda on a tray or cookie sheet
MIX vinegar with liquid water colors of food coloring (1/2 cup of colored vinegar will go a long way)
USE pipette or water dropper to suck up colored vinegar and drip vinegar on the baking soda.
FIZZY COLORS!
toilet paper mush
YOU WILL NEED:
2 rolls toilet paper
a big bowl or bin or container
a bar of ivory soap
borax (found in the laundry section of the grocery store. should be stored out of reach of children)
TO MAKE TOILET PAPER MUSH:
Have fun UNROLLING 2 rolls of toilet paper. Take an end and RUN across the room with it! Make a giant pile of unrolled toilet paper and throw it in the air, dive in it, roll around in it, dance with it, etc. Really don’t miss this step, it is so much fun!
When you are done playing in the toilet paper— STUFF all the toilet paper in your big container.
GRATE a bar (or 2) or ivory soap and add this in
ADD 1/3 cup borax
ADD water a LITTLE at a time until the paper is moistened but not soupy.
MUSH and KNEED the paper, soap, and borax together until it forms a mushy consistency. The more you play with it the better it gets!
Have fun PLAYING and MODELING things out of the “clean mush”
STORED in a zip lock bag or airtight container and your mush can come out and play again.
art supplies
I order most of my basic art supplies from DISCOUNT SCHOOL SUPPLY.
I use their Gel Paint for painting and finger painting; it works with brushes or hands and has a nice glossy finish when it dries, I like it better than the more chalky look/feel of tempera paint. Though I do LOVE their tempera cakes for quick and easy paint set up, I put those in muffin tins and they are ready to go.
I use their liquid water colors for lots of stuff.
I usually only get Red Yellow and Blue paint and mix the other colors myself.
I order reams of their white sulphite drawing paper and I get the heavier weight. I order finger paint paper and water color paper from them as well. They also have glitter paint, tissue paper, fuzzy wire, craft sticks, and GOBS of other stuff!
